Online Communications Strategy + Internet Marketing + Application Development + Web Design + Online Advocacy = Pure

Rochelle Robinsonabout rochelle.

I'm an online communications strategist in Washington, DC with close to 10 years of experience in original web design, database and application development, content creation, online marketing, web analytics, and search engine optimization, social networking, online community building, blogging and blogger outreach.

I specialize in the use of new media to expand messaging beyond traditional audiences and the use of technology for positive changes in public consciousness, law, and social policy. The vast array of clients I've taken on gives me a clear view of what a project really needs and the best way to accomplish the overall goals.

I've worked as a full-time employee and as a freelance consultant for government, corporate, and not-for-profits. I refer to all as clients because I firmly believe that my employment status only dictates how the IRS views me getting paid and not my dedication to the project. My clients have ranged from The Washington Post, The White House, Futures Group, Northern Virginia Community College, FEMA, and the Children's Defense Fund.

I've worked on a variety of social enterprise topics, including social entrepreneurship and nonprofit enterprise development. My most recent campaign involves promoting the involvement of minorities in political and philanthropic activities. I performed online advocacy for not-for-profit organizations that were in dire need of technical and communications talent. I loved the opportunity to mix social change with technology. I helped not-for-profit organizations grow and develop an in-depth understanding and appreciation for technology (hardware and software) and demonstrated how the Web can support their efforts to take action, raise money, and gain new supporters.

I developed online fundraising programs, advocacy campaigns, and promoted online activism through e-mail newsletters, online fundraising appeals, and action alert campaigns. I've worked with media relations professionals, grassroots organizers, technology vendors, and others to expand strategies for nonprofit organizations.

I hold a degree in Computer Studies with a minor in Business Management from the University of Maryland.

Tech Skills:
My tech skills include expertise in web development software such as Dreamweaver (also able to hand code), Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, and Fireworks. My development skills transcend technical languages to include ASP.NET, PHP, and ColdFusion. All projects are designed to comply with web standards (HTML, XHTML, CSS Validators), Section 508 and other accessibility, and multiple browser compatibility.

My Style:
Doctors don't refer to a heart attack as myocardial infarction because it's alarming, pretentious and doesn't explain much to a patient. I use the same premise with my work - I'm not into using the latest and greatest buzzwords to impress. I prefer to explain what I do and how it will ultimately benefit the client. I won't insist on using the newest technology unless a clear benefit and purpose has been established – it's like buying a shiny new car with no engine.
